The perfect kick: trying the local alcohol of a new country/region!

When I got my travel boots on last year, I made a dash for all the local booze. And obviously, it makes perfect sense to have the right crazy people to get inebriated with! Thought I'd share my experience with each, listing the place I visited and the drinks I tried!

1. China (Beijing)
Baijiu (Rice wine), Tsingtao (Beer)

Sooo, my MBA journey at HKU-LBS started with Beijing. One of the most memorable experiences, a big part of which was Baijiu and the things it did to us. Haha for 4 RMB, you get a tiny bottle of explosive shit. With 40-60% ABV and a taste very much like vomit IMO, Baijiu was my classmates' weapon for destruction, EVERY NIGHT. Okay, not every night, but they went crazeballs with it. At first, we were mixing soft drinks but eventually it was just straight off the bottle. And the stories it created! #notsayinganymore. Glad to have the crazy MBA classmates to experience this one! Gānbēi!

I also liked Tsingtao - favourite choice on campus! Yes, we were on a campus in Beijing, learning Mandarin and drinking beer. That's the thing with China, the alcohol was so cheap, there was no reason, not to! I love BJ. #BJ=Beijing
Brought in the new year 2016 in Bali with my craziest friends from school. I honestly don't remember the particular taste of Bintang but I am sure I liked it :P We stocked up our villa with a lot of Bintang, but there was a lot of other booze happening as well.

Bintang Radler is this light lemon beer? I am not sure but it was our substitute for water. Who goes on a vacation and has water, right? It was only 2% ABV but hey wake up and let's start drinking Radler.
Craft beer

On a road trip from London to Manchester, we chanced upon this countryside pub. Decided to just stop over and see the place. It was a pub with a farm behind- such amazing views. Locally brewed beer is the best in the UK. I don't have perfect knowledge about the different brews, but there was such crazy variety! Excellent beer and superb location. I loved how each brew had its unique flavour.
Czech Repulic- the beer capital of the world - calling beer "liquid bread" and consuming the highest 161 litres per capita, this country knows how to drink! They brewing since 993 AD it seems. I went on a family vacation and it was lovely for the four of us to bond over beer. My dad went for the Kozel black and oh my- it was this smoky brew- I simply loved it. The Pilsner Urquell is a pale lager beer at its finest. Interesting fact about Budweiser- the orginal Budweiser was founded in the city of Budweis in 1785. The US company Anheuser-Busch borrowed the name for its famous Budwei<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">ser. So there are two Buds- the Czech and the US.
You can't not be jumping with joy when such a fantastic wheat beer is locally crafted in your country by a kickass beer start-up? Whattt! Although the first batch was produced in Belgium, they are now shifting production to India. It became so popular in India, it sold out! Thankfully, back now. I LOVED the Bira White. Just perfection. And so proud. Obviously with besties, it just tastes the best too.
I haven't visited South Korea, but I tried Soju in a Korean bar in Hong Kong. One of my Korean classmates, Gemma took us to this lovely Korean bar! The Koreans love their soju. I was scared to try (given Baijiu's experience), but it wasn't like that at all. A tad bit sweet and can be potent (up to 45% ABV), taken neat. I liked it, although no affinity, yet.

Pristine. The meaning of this word wasn't known to me till I visited Bagan. Clean and fresh, as if new; spotless. Yes, that's how I would describe what I experienced. Two factors contributing to a perfect weekend trip were the beauty of the place and the hospitality of our tour guide.

Bagan is an ancient city and from 9th to 13th centuries, it was the capital of Kingdom of Pagan. As our guide, Min Thant informed us, 11th to 13th centuries was the height of the Kingdom and during this time some 10,000 temples were constructed. As you view the surroundings, there is vast green space spotted with temples all over. I was challenged to count the number of temples by Min but I laughed off the challenge. Some googling reveals there are about 2,200 temples now remaining. The experience of walking around the open space and visiting tiny and big temples was quite interesting. You can even climb the pagodas (Buddhist temples) and sit on the roof and enjoy the view!

For lunch, we had a sumptuous meal at a very reasonable price. The best part for me were the veggies- brinjal and ladyfinger- made in Indian style! Really made me super happy.

We also visited a cute roadside shack on way to Mount Popa. This shack had utilized the palm tree to the maximum possible- thatched with leaves from the tree with all furniture made from the leaves and trunk. They were making palm sugar and palm wine (toddy or htan ye) in this settlement. I got super excited watching the distillation right in front of me. We took shots of the toddy- it tasted like baijiu (Chinese rice wine). Not at all happy about the taste but the potency was great! There was also a lighter version which they called palm "beer" but that wasn't as fun as the palm wine :D
We really enjoyed the view at Taung Kalat- a volcanic plug near Mount Popa (extinct volcano). I have learnt that a volcanic plug is a lava neck which is created when lava from an existing volcano hardens and the surrounding sediment is eroded away. Interesting to see a Buddhist monastery at the top of Taung Kalat. The walk up to the monastery was fun- couple of stairs and a lot of monkeys! There were volunteers cleaning the stairs and honestly it was very well maintained.

A good deal of China immersion for me- Ling, Cheung Long and Damon were a fun bunch of people! It was great that I have a Chinese name (李可) and very basic Mandarin skills. I thoroughly enjoyed their company with some pineapple pen jokes, perfect photo sessions and nice drinking games.
The rawness of the place cannot be explained in words. It is truly untouched and non-commercialised at this stage. But till when it will remain like this, one cannot say. Also, Min shared with us that his village does not have electricity (84% of households in rural Myanmar have no electricity access), but they have mobile phones. They travel 20 minutes to go charge their phones. Very very interesting. This is where lies Myanmar's opportunity. I advised him to use his knowledge and skills as a guide to keep track of the changing tourist market and grab bigger opportunities to grow. Not in these words though but I became an immediate consultant evaluating his client emails :D The business person in me saw a lot of potential.
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times"; font-size: 13.5pt;">I
am in Yangon for a month now. In my view, this city is raw, crowded, congested
yet calm, friendly and still mellow at night. Everything is rising, waking up,
finding a direction and taking shape.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times"; font-size: 13.5pt;">My first step:

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times"; font-size: 13.5pt;">The
airport is a cute one. By that I mean, it is small and just about basic. As I stepped
out of the airport, I saw my cab driver holding my name card and waving out to
me. He gave me a huge smile and immediately offered to take my luggage. Ah,
back to Asia! I noticed that all cab drivers were wearing the traditional
lungyi and chewing betel leaf. Add to that some humidity. This totally reminded
me of Kolkata. Although in Kolkata, lungyi's are worn at home so this was a bit
surprising!

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times"; font-size: 13.5pt;">My
work experience at Moody's led me to analyze Indian state government finances which
highlighted the deficit in public expenditure on capital assets. I believe that
a partnership with the private sector can lead to sustainable development
outcomes. Thus, here I am interning at a private equity fund in a frontier
market, working to build sustainable businesses in Myanmar. I am excited to be
here at a time when the economy is opening up and embracing changes in almost
every sphere.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times"; font-size: 13.5pt;">The first week:

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times"; font-size: 13.5pt;">I
immersed myself in understanding the workings of my firm and what was expected
from me. The set up is very international, with colleagues from different
nationalities such as Myanmar, British, Singaporean, Canadian, Dutch and Portuguese. A talented and welcoming
set of people! I find the work environment very hands-on with a strong ownership of work.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times"; font-size: 13.5pt;">The
dynamics on the roads are interesting: roads are flanked by hawker stalls on
both sides and pedestrians cross them while traffic is full-on. Cars actually
do stop for you (unlike in India) but it takes some guts and practice to carry
this out!

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times"; font-size: 13.5pt;">Mobile
internet penetration has reached 80% in just two years! This is a spectacular
development in Myanmar with two foreign players ramping up the
telecommunications infrastructure to support 3G from no internet two years ago.
Analysts predict many sectors would see a similar trajectory and thus this
country offers many exciting opportunities! So yes I have my internet, which
became my lifeline in this last year of travelling around.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times"; font-size: 13.5pt;">I
attended two events in my first week: A women's networking event and a start-up
pitching competition. I admired the enthusiasm of both the organizers and
attendees. Foreign organizations are hosting these events with local partners
and bringing in ideas and expertise. You can see how nascent everything is and
yet to fill a room with 60 people is commendable.
I can say that I was the happiest person to know that Romedy Now - a TV channel dedicated to airing movies from the genre "Romantic Comedy or Rom-Coms"- was finally available on Tata Sky!!

And I don't even watch TV. I only watch it for news, sports events and one or two shows that I like to record and watch with my mother. That's about it.

But when I finally saw Romedy Now on the Tata Sky dashboard, I was ecstatic. During the past few days, I discovered that whenever I put the channel, there is a good movie coming which I instantly start watching and then put the next 3-4 on record. Because honestly, Rom-Coms are the best! I totally adore them - they leave me feeling good about friendships, cute relationships and emotions and sometimes bad such as "oh I wish I had such a friend/relationship in my life". But overall, I just connect to them and flow with these kind of movies.

HOWEVER, welcome to Romedy Now - an Indian channel- which has ruined the experience for me! This is what I observed:

1) I am watching this movie, it's going really well. The lead pair is forming a good friendship, there's chemistry and it is all building up to something. Really eager to see how they come together. The scene is going well and BAM. Cut to a random scene. What just happened? Where are we? Oh, they kissed. AND our dear Indian TV Censor Board cut that out entirely! I felt like whaaaaat? And I know this is lame but they were not even anywhere near a bed! They were just kissing- and it was all cut off. No No No, we can't watch two humans in love, kissing each other! What are you saying?

2) Again, another day: Watching a movie. Into the plot. Following the story, ok great. Suddenly there is this woman and there is some hazy thing over her breasts. I wasn't even looking at that and now I have forgotten what was happening and I am focusing on this censored cleavage, wondering what could it be that it had to be censored off like that? Lot of cleavage? Boobs were too big? Boobs weren't the same size? Like WHAT was the problem? And then I am like shit missed what happened there. I wouldn't even have noticed that or thought about it for that long had they not censored it?!! (Oops I have written about Boobs=Breasts on a public platform. Yikes, bye bye blog, I will miss you)

What does this mean? We can watch women in Bollywood jiggle their everything, sing weird double meaning songs with a bunch of leching guys around and some movies which project sick views of how women be treated in society - blame the victim, beti pariyi hoti hai, all that bullshit. But we cannot, no cannot, watch two humans expressing a kiss? Wait, that has to do something with us being Indians and having double standards?

I just cannot understand the reason behind censoring stuff on Romedy Now. Is it because they think if people will watch it, they'll try replicating it? Just like replicating other things shown in Indian movies- how to rob a bank, cheat people, back bitch, rape, murder, become a gangstar, get high on drugs. Those are not censored or no disclaimers are run - is consensual kissing by two adults in love, so horrible that it can corrupt the minds of Indians??

Or do they think by not showing these things, people will never know of kissing, boobs, love, sex..? What you don't see, you don't know?

All humans have done
what they have to do
at the right age and time
irrespective of their geographic location
and across centuries! Should I really be bringing up the Kamasutra point here?

Talk about things- make people learn and understand - banning will not achieve whatever these censorship people are trying to achieve (I have no idea). Ban this/Censor that, someone will find a way to it. Please focus on banning stupid speeches by some daft Indian politicians or discrimination on the basis of one's skin colour? This video by Hollyshit - a Youtube channel-sums up what we should really be banning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-dChNC-ob4

*Sigh* To watch or not to watch, that is the question. Watching each scene with the FEAR OF MISSING OUT. #FOMO.

2015: the year of weddings for me! So many of my friends got married this year and it was great attending the weddings. Mainly for two reasons:

1. I love dancing
2. I love dressing up!

I got the opportunity to choreograph a couple of my friends' sangeets. That was super fun- choosing songs, choreographing and then teaching it to all the friends! I met so many people and made new friends. :)

I am super excited about dressing up for weddings- I believe in going all for it! Where else do all the pretty and fancy Indian clothes come to use? My pillar of support was mine and my mom's venture: Chanderi Tiramisu www.facebook.com/chanderitiramisu. We create sarees and kurtas-both formal/wedding wear and casual chic. Following are the looks I adorned:

1. Anarkali Style Suit

I wore this neon orange anarkali for different functions- went with Mehandi and Sangeet as well. I liked the vibrant feel and the good fit. I teamed it with a 'passa' (head jewellery mainly used in sufi style).
2. Lehenga with Brocade and Velvet.

The best part about this lehenga is its light weight. It looks royal according to me and is easy to wear. Moreover, I love how I feel in it :D
How life has changed.

I remember when we went for movies as kids, there were no multiplexes. Single hall cinemas with a long queue for tickets. Tickets in yellow, green or pink paper- I so remember that! There was also a scrambling for the seats once the gates opened.

We then moved to the multiplex culture- and the options were suddenly so many. There were more movies at one go and more choices for a splendid movie watching experience. But the queue for tickets just got worse somehow! To watch a movie, one had to plan pretty early on- calculating the time that would be spent on that queue to just buy the ticket and then to just enter the hall. Also after waiting out in the queue one would reach the counter only to get 'housefull'- one too many times!

Can I imagine doing that to watch a movie in a hall today? Probably not!

With time, came the option of advance booking so we'd visit the cinema hall earlier to purchase the ticket and then come on the day of the show to watch it. In retrospect, I have done a lot to watch movies- haha quite a movie buff I am.

Never could I imagine the convenience of the click of a button on the internet today! With Book My Show, life changed in a jiffy. At first I could call up and book my movie tickets and later it could just be done online with the choice of my seat. What could be any better?

27 Coupons! (http://www.27coupons.com/) We all like our dose of online coupons which makes purchasing online more attractive and favourable! With nearly 25 offers for Book My Show, including getting a free ticket, discounts on ticket price and cash back options, 27 coupons has offers you can't refuse!

The best part is the transparency in the written text- what the offer is, whom is it applicable for, till when it lasts- all there in one sentence. That's quite convenient! For a direct link to the offers, one can visit http://www.27coupons.com/stores/bookmyshow.com/.

These services today have made things less complicated and more in our hands. What we want to do, when we do it and how we want to do it. Leaving time for more things to do! Haha.

With Make My Trip, I can check flights for anywhere, make my bookings and pay online. They even have turned into a travel agent, where you can not only check out various places but also book packages with Make My Trip. 27 Coupons has offers for this site as well. Usually, a purchase on this website is a big ticket item like flight tickets or hotel bookings- and discounts on these is the icing on the cake a consumer is looking for! I personally liked the 6% cash back on minimum purchase of Rs. 5,000 which 27 Coupons has here: http://www.27coupons.com/stores/makemytrip.com/. And again, the terms and conditions are laid out clearly.
I like technology and I like how everything can be simplified further. While we are happy with a website for making bookings online, we also want some incentive to. 27 Coupons provides just that!

I just followed them on Twitter to keep myself updated on the offers to not miss any opportunity for a good deal :D

Lucknow. I was intrigued to visit this city which is known for its amalgamation of different cultures. Got a chance to visit thanks to a good friend's wedding! It was an exciting trip with a dash of heritage and lots of yummy food!

In this post, I want to mainly focus on the food aspect, because OMG, each meal was finger licking good (yes, KFC's tagline but 10 times better than KFC :P)

First of all, the foodie in me got a taste of yummy vegetarian (read Baniya/Jain) food at my friend's house: jeera aloo, kadi, rice, roti, paneer and what not! Each dish had its own flavour and was a delight to savour!

We then had an agenda to taste the famous Tunday Kebab of Lucknow. Got to Aminabad and reached Tunday Kebabi. The prices! Rs. 32 for 4 beef kebabs, at this day and age! Highly under priced..haha we never get such prices in Delhi.. Well, prices apart, the kebabs were delicious. Perfectly melt-in-the-mouth and spiced yummily (if that's a word!). We also had mutton galauti kebabs, sheermal and mughlai parantha. Satisfied, we left to try the next dish.

Finding a "Ram ji" food shop was not tough in the same lane. We stopped for our vegetarian friend, who tried kachauri with chole and veg kebabs. Honestly, I dug into that too and it had amazing flavour. In Lucknow, food is delicious, whatever you have!

We then tried the famous Prakash Kulfi, which was phenomenal- great taste and just the right quantity!

I always have "mineral water golgappas" in Delhi. In Lucknow, I made an exception. Looking at an awesome street-side golgappa wala who was serving paanch paani golgappas- I flipped! I eagerly tried all of them and sooo glad I did! Each had its own mouth-watering flavour!

Finally, at Chowk, I tried the famous Idris Biryani. Finding it was fun, we kept walking along the street and asking people where it was. It had no name board!

When we reached, we confirmed around us that this was it. Well, the mutton biryani was wonderfully spiced with soft mutton pieces- melt in the mouth experience! What's biryani without digging in your hands?

Paired this up with some delicious lassi from Sri Lassi!

In all, I learnt that in Lucknow:

1. There are only 2-3 items in the menu
2. These items are totally delicious
3. The prices of these items are amazing
4. Service will only take 2 minutes and you'll be well taken care of
5. There are no taxes
6. You leave full, happy and wanting more!

Thank you Vardhman and Akanksha for giving us a chance to savour Lucknow's delicacies!

My alma mater never fails to impress me. It is enchanting that I can still learn from my alma mater after four years of graduating. Recently, the Lady Shri Ram College Alumni Association has become quite active and I have volunteered as a Batch Representative for the 2011 batch. I contributed in the organisation of a couple of events- some big scale and others small- and it was a wonderful experience- going back to college and connecting with alumna who graduated anywhere between 1 year to 40 years back!

We started a Book Club recently. (All ELSAs invited to join! http://www.lsralumna.org/become-a-member.php).

The first book was Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman by Haruki Murakami. I had never read a Murakami book so first I read up about the author online and found that he is an intriguing author. This book contains short stories - which is an unusual format for me- I prefer novels.

I started reading the first story on a flight. I read the first story and while completely engrossed, by the end of it, I was zapped. It had a meaning, but I couldn't get it. I thought I'll move over to the second one and felt the same again! How I missed Google Search at that moment!! I decided to keep the book aside- what did the connotations mean? Why couldn't I interpret them? Why had the author provided such vague details?

That is the sense of Murakami. Later, I read up online on those stories and found other people who felt like me. I usually need interpretations of ambiguous things- just for my satisfaction. But these stories made me realise that sometimes life has no answers. Murakami picks up instances, experiences and thoughts from daily life of people and gets you so involved in the story. Then, would give you lot of detail but leave out some part on which you would reflect later and keep wondering what could have been! This was my first experience of reading Murakami. I had mixed feelings. But now having read half of the book, I am enjoying this! And not all the stories are that vague, for some, I have found my meaning :D

He compels people to think of things they might not have paid attention to but are essential parts of their lives. For instance, in "The Mirror", he makes you realize that the biggest fear you can have is yourself. If one tells you that, you wouldn't take it. But when you read this story, it is impressed upon you that how much you control your thoughts and mind- which can influence you!

That was just one example, but I have had fun reading Birthday Girl, A Perfect Day for Kangaroos, and A Folklore for My Generation too.

Definitely going to read more by the author!

Sarees look fabulous. In my opinion, sarees really make a woman look and feel great! Also, there are so many fabrics, colours and styles in which one can drape a saree- never a dull moment!

My mother is so passionate about Indian textiles that she visualizes a saree out of any type of material. She transformed this talent to start her fashion design studio called Chanderi Tiramisu- quirky name to keep up with her personality!

Here are 4 looks out of Chanderi Tiramisu's collection of sarees-

Look 1: White chanderi saree with lady motif embroidered- a Stunning statement piece

Just saw #revolverrani. Ahh wonderful movie. Authenticity at its best. Did not go with any background knowledge..what it's about etc.. so zero expectations.. in such situations I mostly enjoy movies. And anyway I really don't get it why people get so agitated about how a movie is and start judging other people for liking or disliking a particular movie. 'Omg she likes that movie?' 'Now she's an outcast' and the likes.

Ok hear up you. My choice..my money...my eyes..my opinion...whether I love it or hate..it's none of your business! And if you care so much..you should fund my movies and I'll think about your request to agree with you!

Lol.

Back to where I was. I thoroughly loved the performance by Kangana Ranaut...she's completely on a roll! Vir Das as well has done a superb job- quite central to the plot. No spoilers here. All I can say is I absolutely loved the style of spoken Hindi typical of that part of Madhya Pradesh.. the humour was just amazing. Overall the treatment of the movie was fantastic and kept me engaged throughout.

What I Realised:

The best part: Role reversal between Kangana and Vir- in a typical gangster movie.. (or generally in society)- the woman is used shuttled around and kept captive to the male- but here in this movie.. the way Kangana rules over Vir Das- it's just hilarious to watch. Seeing her in power and bossing him around - not a typical Hindi movie or not what many men would like to see even.. but that's what's always done to women and no one has a problem with that. He has to do all her bidding and the only reason is he needs money from her to fulfill his Bollywood dreams so he takes it all. There's a lot he takes...lol..

Main point: money is power. And as long as all women are not financially independent.. some of them will continue to live the life because they depend on their husband/father/brother for the money to run their lives and hence agree to whatever shitty terms are set around them. This movie exemplifies that - in a reversal of roles- so I am not advocating pick a gun and become empowered-all I am saying is that with financial independence comes power- doesn't matter if you're male or female.

We use them all the time. Involuntarily, necessarily, obviously. And with everyone.

I'm talking about eyes and hands.

We see so many things, people- everything! A passing glance, a random meeting of eyes, we notice and move on. We use our hands most commonly for anything we have to do. But has one ever wondered that just one glance or just one brush with someone can become special based on the person one is interacting with?

When you look into the eyes of the person who's special to you, it changes the world around you. It has been said often, it has been portrayed in cinema often that people can talk with their eyes. But when with just that one look, you feel something- you know it's true! Why we avoid eye contact at times? Do we fear that since our eyes can say so much we might just reveal what we are actually thinking?

Hands. When do we not use them? Always upto something, they are! But when the same hands come in contact with people dear to us- there's an electric current all right! It can indicate to you-how you really feel and can even signal to the other person. Do we still need words? Why do we not realise the significance of these things?

Feel. What a word. With too many definitions. What and how do you feel? Is it a function of the heart? or is everything a part of what you are feeling?

Kritikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15991548931637833877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3805284799146193245.post-86412441946222829362013-07-03T11:57:00.000-07:002013-07-03T11:57:01.214-07:00"They" will think like "that"

A: Hi, who's "they"?

B: You know them, those people, humans (i think) around us...

A: Oh! What were they born for?

B: To scrutinize me, judge me on what I do, wear, say, eat...

A: Hmm...what were you born for?

B: To conform to what "they" think is right for me. I only behave as "they" think I should behave. You know all I care about is to structure my life so I'm not out of sync with anyone's thinking. My life is "their" job.

A: Right. So you must be appreciated by them and in everyone's good books? Like how you want it.

B: I don't know. I mean I have dedicated my life so "they" can tell me what to wear, how to wear it, what to eat, what not to eat, what to say, think, write, practice. You know everything they wanted. But I still feel I'm doing something wrong, "they" just aren't pleased!

Well, little did B know that whoever this "they" is, doesn't really give a damn about you. It's just a mechanism used by certain people to make others conform to what they think is right. But first, what is right and what is wrong? And who certified their thinking as right? As kids, we are taught a variety of things, from a whole bunch of people. It is okay to take that as given, considering the limited development of the brain. But as adults, or let's say a mature human, can one not gauge what's right for themselves? Or in another way, I'm sure one can lead a life without first thinking what everyone on this planet might think about one's actions. There has to be a point where people think for themselves or are we to just follow what is the norm? If we all behaved according to a set of everyone else's rules, we'd be clones of each other. But are we?

Walking along a path...going your way..choosing your direction...or maybe going with the flow..it's your wish and you might not even have given it a thought..you just move...

And then chance upon a hill..there is a way to go by the valley or climb the hill...you take the chance or get a feeling to just take the unconventional route and give the hill a shot..it's steep...it's tough..and not something you signed up for, but you don't know that yet.

So you're busy doing it your way..setting your foot on a firm rock to propel yourself up, placing your hands at the right spot to lift up and climb the hill..it's challenging, fun, enjoyable and you're doing well.

Out of the blue, a rope drops. A sign of help. Someone up there wants to lend you a hand, that's strange! you didn't ask for it! Should you take it?? That's a dilemma it'll be easier for sure, but weren't you liking giving yourself that thrill? But wait! The rope might be fun too, let's go for it.,.you take it and indeed it's a smooth ride and you're glad for some company..some indication that you aren't alone and you can get to the top of this hill and cross it!

Suddenly the rope starts becoming lose, as if the support is waning..it soon starts withdrawing..without any explanation..any sign..it's gone and you're some way up but the rest you gotta make it on your own. That's ok. Weren't you helping yourself before that? Weren't you absolutely happy? Now why do you miss that rope? Why do you think someone was trying to support you? It's your journey...you have to find your way...

But still..you wait...in total anticipation, you hope, you pray - that rope will drop again..You can't move forward..you can't take a step ahead...all those techniques you knew to climb the hill with just fail before you..you can't figure it out..you need that rope..rope rope rope...your brain's full of it..but does it come? No. Not when you want it. Not when you crave for it.

Kritikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15991548931637833877noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3805284799146193245.post-24210507667622466382012-09-06T12:14:00.002-07:002012-09-06T12:14:36.363-07:00One off.

Why....sometimes there's no reason.... there's no explanation. you just move forward and leave a trail behind. A plethora of people, things, moments, times, reasons, meanings, words, thoughts, state of mind, beliefs. Everything moves in a different direction, a symbol of change. And how you react shapes you. First reaction is disbelief, discomfort, denial, refusal, rejection, pain.........

Then comes the second stage...realisation, eureka! - revelation.....which finally leads to acceptance, or trying to convince yourself that yeah this is it. This is where I start afresh. This is my next chance. I have to be strong and accept this step...because only after acceptance comes acknowledgement of your position...a true assessment of where you stand.

A common way to soothe oneself is nothing is in your hands. haha. So untrue. Everything lies with you. You own yourself. You will have to stop taking something which you don't deserve or you have to make something happen for you....nothing and no one will come served on a platter...you make it. Words are the easiest and at the same time effective, but action is rare.

Let's wander, let's roam..let's find a place of our own...
figure out who we are.. utilize our potential...exert ourselves to the hilt...
dream..breathe...feel....see...observe...inhale...
find your own...belong..be wanted...give...extend...smile...feel happy in there...
so tough..so much effort...all for nothing?

Positivism shall prevail...sooner or later. Never forget to believe. Trust who you must.

So freaking philosophical. Moi? Haha.

So every word has a meaning...and so does every song. And I connect with every song with some meaning... Some lyrics just go aptly with my frame of mind... I'm a crazy lyrics person - they mean the world to me..and I really appreciate the people who wrote songs even though composing them is tough but giving the feel to the music is also commenndable...so here are some of the lyrics I love the most...

A speech by Sheryl Sandberg, COO Facebook.

Indeed extremely inspiring. She is urging women to take the ambitious route, to dream big, to lean in and not make decisions on the basis of the future. From this, what I have realised is to live for the present and to live for myself. One of the biggest hurdle in the progress of women is obviously the majority of men and more than them, a lot of women too. That's my understanding. Why accept what the so-called society dictates and why let other women suffer from what one woman suffered? In the name of 'protecting' women, and 'making them behave in a certain way' (will never understand this shit), women are curbed world over. You have to speak out, you have to take your stand and other women especially have to and should support you.

At least the developed world offers equality, but like Sheryl mentions equality isn't quality..you have to push yourself and believe in yourself to reach the top of your job! Well, for developing countries, it's a completely different situation. Women are simply a commodity to be used and abused. Extremely small percentage of women are empowered to think and do what they want. Like me. My parents have given me the complete freedom and they never hold the "you're a woman" sword over my head. And that has given me tremendous confidence to dream, to try, to hope that I can do as I want. When I see and read cases where women do not even possess basic rights (from the extremely rich and educated women just marrying an even richer guy and giving up their career for household chores to the women who are supposed to cover every inch of their body and be beaten for wearing nail polish! http://now.msn.com/now/0525-saudi-nail-polish-defiance.aspx),
it makes me realise, we have a LONG way to go to change people's mindset! If the young lot won't THINK any different, they won't DO any different. Your society doesn't define you and make you. You make your life, whoever you are. Have to stop giving the power to judge you to the world! Live and let live! When will people understand?

Till then, I'm extremely lucky to have such amazing and understanding parents. And I hope I can make a difference.

Wish I knew where I stand
Hope to figure out these things I am feeling
One moment up and the other down
It's a winding lane and I'm twisting around

Somehow one chapter has reached its end
The next one has taken its course
Clearly, the story goes on,
but still stuck in understanding what happened before

Conflicts, confusion, unexplored terrain,
all together are driving me insane
A change in what i'm thinking, feeling, saying, doing
Tell me, am I new person now?

Is it me, is it who I want to be?
Is there a metamorphosis or is it evolution?
For the better or the worse?
Such a mind- numbing turmoil

Cannot find a guiding light
to reveal what's going on
Cannot seem to fathom a damn thing
just playing along with the tide

Will I hurt or cause pain?
Will I be able to discern?
Or is that how it goes?
Figuring, discovering, knowing, realization?
Can hardly believe that life has changed so much...never thought years would begin from April and life would revolve around quarters but that's what seems to be happening now! But I'm not complaining! In fact I'm taking life head on as it's coming my way...Work is great - not only in terms of what I'm learning and doing but also in terms of interacting with people around me. It's really fun going to work now because of my friends there....our group has become insane fun now!! It's like we're laughing all the time and just enjoying talking all the time..it hardly seems like office environment... thats a good thing..because then its not only about the work...went on a trip and got crazy...it's been going good...
So, I'll always have this soft corner for Alternative Rock. It just expresses me well. Even though I really don't have a favourite genre, my mood decided my genre. So I basically listen to all types of music...different phases, situations, frames of mind bring different music to my ears. So anger goes well with Children of Bodom, ALWAYS! Passion and craze goes well with Metallica. Classics are forever welcome in rock and metal both. A dancing mood brings on clubbing and hip hop to some extent. Then obviously Hindi music songs..the emotional ones and the fun ones too...and other genres which soothe emotional trauma. Basically all goes for me.

I feel like #Lifehouse currently. Jason Wade's soothing voice! I just love how the band's music touches me. Every song has something fabulous about it. Something that attracts me to each and every word and tune. All time favourites are Everything, Hanging by a moment, Sick cycle carousel, Take me away, You and me, You belong to me, Halfway gone, Broken and the list goes on....

There's something in Jason Wade's voice.. something totally attractive...it sounds so honest and so from the heart, you want to believe all he's singing. I also just loovee the lyrics...if I would want to express myself I would use those words. Everything about Lifehouse works for me. And I can listen to their songs over and over again... it's just so relaxing and reassuring.
How I waited for this day to arrive.
May- i got to know METALLICA would be coming to India. it was completely unbelievable and an impossible thing to ever happen. however, soon it was confirmed on Metallica's website that they would indeed be touring India, not only Bangalore but Delhi as well. *omg*
June- waited desperately for ticket information
July- reserved tickets and soon paid for them and got confirmation
The wait till October was unbearable - half believing that this would actually happen..all sorts of doubts crossed everyone- maybe just a joke.
But when in October first week we held the tickets in our hands, it seemed Yes after all it is true! It was a long wait but oh-so-worth-it!!

And we engaged in making grand plans for the day! That included taking off for the day from work, I mean I had to be there from the start! We planned to go early to get in fast and also to chill and meet friends before going in. Basically start the party early!

And then came the day! The 28th of October 2011. All night till 4 am I was listening to Metallica songs..guessing the probable set list and being all excited - could hardly sleep- coz we were up at 8am. Finally got ready and put on the Metallica tshirt and off with friends to the venue. Few people were there but not that many yet. It was 11 am. I left my brother and his friends at the gate since they didn't wanna hang with me and my friends.

I went ahead with my friends and we set up our music (Metallica ofcourse) in the car and the other stuff we had planned..i met my other friends..and everyone was superrr excited. But the phone signal was not working because I tried to contact my brother and I couldn't get through for over 2 hours. And then we went to the mall to use the washroom, from there I connected and got to know that my brother had fainted and all..I panicked! I packed food and drinks for him n rushed back..but I could not get in touch with him because of 2 reasons:
1. No SIGNAL
2. The crowd had swelled to a crazy extent and there was a swarm of people and my brother was in the centre of it

That's Akant and I to the right.
And everyone, including Sanjana and Kunal to the bottom. Sanjeeta was with her friends at the time.
And Arpan I could not find anyway!

Well, we let the people get in first, gates opened at 4. In my hyperness and frenzied anxiety, I could just not tolerate being in the crowd. So we entered towards the end, and sat around far from the stage, bought some merchandise and tried to feel better. Again I went on two searched around the place but no trace of dear Arpan. Finally some announcement was made asking people to move back and it appeared like people were not complying since it was impossible with no one to guide them and the firang guy on the mic called the audience "Buttheads". It was India and he thought he could get away by calling us that. Just really pathetic. And a reason why the crowd became so angry. Worse of it, nothing started till 6 pm..people had been waiting for ages for something to start- there was no opening act - nothing was happening and we were all just getting impatient. Then eventually someone picks up the mic- the same firang guy and declares that there are some"technical glitches" due to which the concert is postponed and asks us to "come tomorrow". I mean random guy, no apologies, nothing. Just a come tomorrow. like wtf. everyone was too shocked to realise what hit them. And some 20 people out of a crowd of 25,000 got really agitated and angered by this announcement and started the vandalism. they had come from so far around the country and waited for so long just to hear this? the point is that it's not the people who should be blamed if you put any crowd in any country who are crazy abt Metallica and have been waiting all their life to listen to them and you are treated horribly and told off like cattle - you can't expect them to just suck it ! There have been riots over shows being postponed in countries, at least nothing that bad happened here. And everyone knows that the permission to hold a concert is not sought in a day, it took months to get permission for 28th and the organizers very well know that.

So ultimately we were victims of a terribly mismanaged event and the worse is that we had so many expectations out of it and had pegged out hopes on it and hardly expected it to go so horribly wrong. Pathetic, sick organization. Also highlighted by the fact that they sold more tickets than the capacity, people who booked tickets online did not receive them- had to wait in 5 hr long queues to get their ticket and were ultimately told that "get in anyway u want we don't care", and the 4 organizers of the shitty DNA networks are behind bars! rotting in jail- thank god!

Got to know that eventually Arpan got wind of the cancellation as he was right up front with his friends and they left before and we also tried to escape before the scene got any worse. It was a task getting out but that's when the phne finally connected and I spoke to him. *phew* All through, Akant was a constant support so I didn't feel all lost. And well we did have a decent enough time before the drama started.

Tried to wear off this nightmare by going to chilis and having an awesome meal and the depression hangs over but should pass off- by listening to some more Metallica. Ah!
Kritikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15991548931637833877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3805284799146193245.post-61695530511312563722011-10-19T10:43:00.000-07:002011-10-19T10:43:20.239-07:00Comrade, it's the Animal Farm!
I'm so glad to have read this masterpiece! What an amazing book, the Animal Farm by George Orwell. Through the story of an animal farm, where its animals rise to rebellion, the author presents the facts about the socialist regime of Stalin in the Soviet Union. It unveils what the so-called "socialism" of Stalin did to the country and its people and how the corrupt leaders at the top benefited by exploiting those at the bottom. The book also manages to highlight the problems seen in a democracy as well as a capitalist society.

The best part about the book is the symbolism used to represent real people through animals with the exact characteristics of the people. An amazing way to get the point across!

One thing is for sure- the book opens a forum for discussion if nothing else and fascinates the mind to think deeper!

Onto the next one by Orwell- 1984!
Kritikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15991548931637833877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3805284799146193245.post-85004555529108578642011-10-09T01:58:00.000-07:002011-10-09T01:58:48.517-07:0090210 Fever!
So, I'm completely hooked onto 90210, a little late I guess, but oh well, these shows are addictive! I am season 2 currently, and I just can't seem to get enough, download-watch-download-watch all the time!!
While, it's all fun and drama and exciting, what I observed was how fast the teenagers grow up abroad. I mean they lose their innocence way too fast in life, at 15! They just lose their childhood and the joys of growing up! seriously, life's exciting when you progress to do new things which you were forbidden before but when it's your age. while different societies mature at different stages and have a distinct way of advancing, pregnancy at the age of 16 is ridiculous for any culture, yes I know child marriage is prevalent in India and everything that happens abroad has a mirror image here in India.

But I don't want to compare rural India with urban advanced countries. That's just messed up. Because for every pregnancy, drug abuse and whacko thing that they do, they have a mechanism to deal with it also, they have knowledge, awareness and institutions, solutions to deal with these things, but here back in India, there is no such concept. And that is just a horrifying experience.
Anyway, back to my point of comparing my life (let's be subjective) to this show, I can say it might be exaggerated to some extent, but all shows reflect the reality in society to a great extent. And that's where I feel, that Im thankful for my upbringing, I wouldn't wanna deal with such severe emotional drama and trauma that they are facing at 16. I was happy where I was and how I have progressed with things and made my choices. while everyone makes mistakes, i'm glad mine were the ones from which i learnt, and hence made the right choices.
And thank god, in reality he's not 16! ha!
Kritikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15991548931637833877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3805284799146193245.post-28209732567630317352011-09-16T09:50:00.000-07:002011-09-16T09:50:14.864-07:00Work-o-holic!
Never thought I would be one! Well, not one yet! But a drained, tired and exhausted person everyday for sure. That's what I have become post my new job... working in ICRA as a Research Associate in the Public Finance Dept, really liking my job, no doubt...direct application of the Economics Hons I have studied. It's really good work...and very interesting.

Suddenly though I have changed. So much more aware..so much more knowledgeable..punctual..everyday I wake up on time, get ready for work and still have time to have breakfast! Unlike college, where I never woke up on time and scrambled to get to class ! Gosh, and how tired I get, sleep by 11 30...

Have I become old? Not quite! Yet, this feeling...need to get back to studying! And soon....
Kritikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15991548931637833877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3805284799146193245.post-19318470230245550662011-09-08T09:40:00.000-07:002011-09-08T09:40:13.401-07:00As I walk away.....
I don't want to start here, I don't want to open up to the world. But I just want to say one thing: I am honest. I believed I couldn't do that anymore and I couldn't see the other person living a farce. I can't be untrue to the person who was special to me, and still is and always will be....

Even though I do this, I hope sometime you will realise that I only meant the best for both of us.

And I will make it till where I have to go, and I will survive through high and low, and I will be free of this never-felt-before emotion, and I hope to be forgiven for my intention was to be honest, and I all need is some time, time to see this through, for me and you.
